This Just In…. News Releases Are Not Dead

Donn Pearlman, Dec 2012If your PR agency flatly declares, “Press releases are dead,” then perhaps you should immediately look for another agency. Not all PR efforts must be condensed to 140 characters.

Contrary to what you may have been told, press releases still play an important role in getting your messages to the news media and your target audience(s). Some news media use well-written press releases virtually verbatim. “New” media and social media have simply forced all communicators to do what good communicators have done all along: write succinctly and compellingly.

Press releases are not dead, but they must be relevant to be successful. It’s not always simply providing the Who, What, Where, When, Why and How. Sometimes, to get the attention of the news media and your pertinent audiences, the most important question you can answer is, “So what?”
